About Alan Rose
The author took his first degree in chemistry at the end of the second world war. He then developed an interest in biochemistry, and after working in research biochemistry, was advised to go and take a degree in medicine, which he completed in 1954. After two Hospital house jobs, he spent his remaining career years in clinical research, studying at different times inborn errors of metabolism, metabolic bone diseases such as osteoporosis, vitamin D resistant rickets and hyperparathyroidism. Finally he did a lot of work on formation and prevention of renal stones. He wrote some 200 or more original papers and in the last 10 years before retirement travelled the world as an invited speaker at many conferences. After retirement from the NHS in 1990, he expected a quiet life, but it was not to be. After 3 enjoyable months as visiting professor in the Sultanate of Oman , he met up with one of his former research biochemists who asked him to join in opening the London Gender Clinic. This proved to be the most controversial matter he had ever undertaken and forms the basis of part one of this book. In addition, his medicolegal work as expert witness in drink-driving matters, expanded enormously, and this work forms the basis of part two of this volume.
