Today we welcome Clarissa Yip, a multi-published author who is going to do some serious damage to your Must Read list before the visit is out. She’s is sensitive to this, however, and comes with a goodie bag: one lucky reader will get to reach inside and remove a title from Decadent Publishing’s catalog. Want to find out how to win? Keep reading!
Welcome, Clarissa! It’s an honor to have you here today, and you came with luggage—THREE fantastic new releases! Can you give readers a brief overview of your books? What sets each one apart from the rest?
Hi Sarah! I’m so excited to be here today! I’ve have three new releases within the past two months and it’s been a blast!
One Chance is a story where Jenna is determined to save her best friend, Cade, from marrying the wrong woman. She’s finally worked up the nerve to bare her true feelings, hopefully he feels the same way!
Silent Night’s Seduction is sweet story set in Alaska, where Lily is kidnapped and forced on a plane destined for a one-night stand, by her very own brother! Yes, I know a little disturbing, but you’ll see the elves at work to hooking her up with her ex-husband—hot DA Rafe Martinez! She’s a fiery little cowgirl, who had thought her life set until she steps into Winter-Wonderland Hell.
Lastly, Tempting a Prince is about Sarah who is determined to get over her life-long crush on her best friend’s brother and flies to Vegas with her BFF’s ready to have a night of her life and meet Prince Charming, only Prince Charming isn’t that charming and turns out to be the very one she’s been running away from—Evan Hunt. Funny how fate throws a curveball.
Wow – they all sound tempting! I don’t know which one I’d go for first, but I have to admit I’m wondering how Cade reacted to Jenna in ONE CHANCE. Pretty sure I could spend an afternoon exploring all three, though! Which of your new releases do you feel closest to as an author? Why?
I would have to say Sarah. I’m always—and still am—looking for my Prince Charming, but seeing her realize that men are not perfect, I totally have to agree. I can only kiss so many frogs before my lips are chapped…lol
LOL! That’s an awesome way to connect with a character. :c) Your bio says you love to travel. What are some of the most bizarre places you’ve visited? Have any of them ever made an appearance (in either name or spirit) in your stories?
I’ve never really been out of the country except to the Bahamas. But I have lived in Hawaii for three years and I have to say it’s my favorite of all places. I spend time between the West Coast and East Coast, depending on where my travels would take me, but I think Hawaii tops it all. I’ve lived downtown in the business district, where my apartment view faced the Harbor and I got to witness all the cruise ships take port. I’ve also lived at a resort for a while, and I think the most bizarre things I’ve ever seen there is the common running around of lizards in bushes, cockroaches the size of thumbs, and spiders the size of my fist. Those were totally scary! The only downfall to such a beautiful place, but the sites are amazing! The soapy breezes, hibicus’ lining the streets. It’s gorgeous! Oh and the beach and the huge turtles! Okay, I’m so homesick now.
I am working on a mini-series where my stories take place out there, but it’s one of my resolutions to finish them before this new year is over.
It sounds amazing (okay, minus the roaches). I love how writing about a specific place can really take you there, and writing about somewhere you love allows you to pour so much of that emotion onto the page. Based on that alone, I’m betting your mini-series will be FANTASTIC! =c) Let’s dig a little more into what you’ve got out now. If a reader is unfamiliar with your work, which of your books would you suggest he or she read first? Why?
That depends on what the reader likes, really. I write mainly contemporary romance, sometimes with a bit of humor. If you’re looking for something a little hotter, I would recommend my Tempting series. If you’re looking for something sweet, then I would say Love by Auction or Snowy Encounters. I’m a very emotionally-driven writer.
That’s one great thing about having such an awesome backlist — something for everyone! Which genre are you drawn to as a reader? Do you prefer to read in the same genre as your WIP or do you mix it up?
As a reader, I practically read everything! I go in spurts depending on my mood. Usually, I’m more drawn to paranormals and contemporaries with cowboys and Navy men! I don’t write paranormals, but that might be something in the far…far…very far future. I love writing contemporaries the best, sometimes with a little bit of suspense.
I’m definitely a mood reader — I can relate! Speaking of moods, LOL, have you ever battled with any of your characters over their personality traits? If so, who won – you or the character?
What a funny question! I’m always battling with my muse! She’s still mad I decided to move back to the mainland and now she can’t run wild on the beach no longer! I’m usually a plotter so I spend a lot of time plotting, but when I actually sit down to write, my muse wreaks havoc and convinces my characters to change or do something totally uncalled for! Evil persists!
My muse totally loves the beach! (And likewise dislikes me, LOL. I’m glad I’m not the only one dealing with such insubordination! *Grin.*) Have you ever made big changes in your story because someone – your crit partner, a friend, or beta reader – really didn’t like it? Are you glad you did (or didn’t)?
I actually write from my heart. If something doesn’t work for one person, I’ll think about that person’s words, but if two or more make the same comment, then I may tweak it so it works, but most importantly, I need it to work for me. I have wonderful CP’s at Passionate Critters and they’ve NEVER steered me wrong. I’m very lucky to be part of a group of awesome women!
Wow, you have a whole team behind you! (They can help you stare down that incorrigible muse, too, LOL.) Of course, there’s a means to that end. Along the way, how do you keep track of plot elements or twists?
This sounds like one of those moments where pantsing is needed. Lol. I may look organized but truly, I let my muse take free rein when needed. I try to plot carefully then some twist or some crazy element may pop in my mind and I know I have to make it work, so I don’t really keep track, per se…more like write it as it comes.
Okay, sshhh, don’t tell anyone I said this, but I’m very much the same way. I LOVE when new twists hit me as I go! (I dare say it makes me giddy!) Which of your novels most reflects who you are as a writer? Why?
You know, it’s amazing to pull out all those stories I’ve written as a kid and the ones where I’ve finally decided that I am going to make a career out of being a writer. Love By Auction is actually my very first release and it holds dear to heart because it was the first step in publication besides the writing and the hundreds of rejections I’ve received. It’s been such a great learning experience and I can only hope my work is improving with each story penned…or typed. Lol. The heroine is very close to me. The doubt, the need to find courage, and finally making the move to what I want. That story still grips me every time I read it.
Who can resist reading it now? LOL. I bet that first release is doubly sweet considering you started writing as a kid. It’s really awesome you have so much of your own history upon which you can look back. Of course, there’s plenty moving forward! What are you currently working on?
Oh my. I have too many projects in the works. Currently, I’m working on the last book in my Tempting series then a few requests that I’ve gotten through my publishers. My new novella, True Connections will be released Spring 2012 from Entangled Publishing as part of their Valentine’s Anthology. I’m hoping to have a wonderful and productive New Year’s.
I have absolutely no doubt you’ll make it happen, Clarissa! Let’s take a look at what’s new now:
Sarah Westfall is on a mission. Living the mundane life of a near spinster school teacher and sick of her parents throwing eligible men at her, she is determined to get over her crush on her best friend’s brother. She wants a prince and wouldn’t settle for less. What better way than a 1Night Stand?
Evan Hunt needs to figure out his enemy’s game plan. Chasing his nemesis to Las Vegas and signing up for Madame Eve’s service and masquerade, he never expected the woman he’s desired for years to appear before him…as his princess.
When their attraction fires the night, the inevitable happens. Her prince isn’t as charming as she’s hoped, but he does save her from trouble. Would he be willing to fulfill her fantasies also?
Stubborn and proud cowgirl, Lily McCormick, is finally coming to terms with her quiet life on her parent’s ranch, until her older brother, as payback, signs her up for 1NightStand. Kidnapped and forced onto a plane to a foreign location, she faces the dreaded cold and an unwanted tryst, until her ex-husband appears before her…as her date.
New York City District Attorney, Rafe Martinez, would do anything to get his ex-wife back, even if it meant taking drastic measures to pretend he was there for another woman. When jealousy and rage surfaces and Lily’s tough demeanor wanes, desire and lust sparks their once powerful connection as truths unfold. Will Rafe convince her to return to him or push her further away from giving their love a second chance?
Shy tomboy Jenna Faulkner has been in love her whole life—with her best friend. Except he’s marrying the wrong woman, and he doesn’t know it yet. But she’s determined to save him.
Instead of the normal bachelor party, Jenna decides to throw a different type of gathering…with just her. Alone. Will Cade finally come to his senses and see Jenna for more than a friend, or has she ruined their friendship once and for all?
