Ya’ll know I have mad love for CANDY G author C. Zampa, and today I’m thrilled to announce she’s joining us for a brand new interview! Pull up a chair and get cozy … maybe stare at that hawt cover a little while before we get started. Ready? Okay.
Welcome, Zampa! Are you still walking on air? ;c) Your new book CANDY G was also your first release. Which part of the publishing process—from the initial submission to release day and beyond—made the biggest impact on you? Why?
Wow. Tough question. I’d have to say there’s a tie between being offered the contract and the first sight of the cover art. Something about seeing your characters, your vision, in living color—through the eyes of the people who had faith in you enough to accept you—is an experience beyond compare.
I have to agree – seeing cover art REALLY makes it real for me. Which element of CANDY G are you most hoping readers will pick up on? What do you want them to take from the novel?
The characters’ insecurities, their HUMAN factor, their extreme vulnerability. And the ridiculous things we do when caught on the blind side of love. That humans are capable of some really crazy things when emotions come into play.
Yeah, I shudder to think of the things we do when our emotions are running high! How has your writing life changed since becoming a published author?
I hope it’s improved? Not sure if I have noticed a change in it or not. But the publishing experience DOES bring you face to face with every flaw, every thing that SHOULDA, COULDA, WOULDA been different, when it’s too late to do anything about it. LOL. THAT, in itself is an education of mass proportions.
You’ve got that right! In that exact sense, LOL, publication makes us brilliant. Which genre are you drawn to as a reader? Do you prefer to read in the same genre as your WIP or do you mix it up?
Any genre with strong characters that I can get intimate with. I DO read the same genre as my book, and my current WIP is also the same genre (m/m). But I love good romance, no matter what genre.
Speaking of good romance, let’s look back over all of the intimate moments you’ve created between characters. Which scene would you most like to experience for yourself? What makes it so alluring?
Gotta blush here. The balcony scene in Candy G. That—okay, here’s a dirty confession—is a fantasy of mine. Twenty-two floors above the busy riverwalk, on a balcony, making naked whoopee. Mmmm.
MEGA HOT! Have you ever battled with any of your characters over their personality traits? If so, who won – you or the character?
The character. Always. I’ve tried over and over to make this macho Alpha man, but every time he bucks horns with me and ends up being a Alpha/Beta who cries. Sheesh. What are you gonna do? The guys are bigger than me!
I think I’m gonna need a moment. First the balcony scene, and now I have images of bucking men gyrating through my mind … oh, dear. *deep breath & clears throat* Have you ever made big changes in your story because someone – your crit partner, a friend, or beta reader – really didn’t like it? Are you glad you did (or didn’t)?
Oh, yes. Most certainly. I am confident of my characters and their personalities, but I will be the first to admit I am not the Queen of Plotting. It is not my strong suit. So I listen and CRAVE the advice of others who might have a better ‘eye’ for plotting.
It can be hard to see our stories when we’re so close to them – that second opinion can be invaluable! Which of your novels most reflects who you are as a writer? Why?
I only have one. LOL…But it most surely DOES reflect me. I’m tough where I need to be, but am a softie on the inside and extremely vulnerable. And I love big.
Aw, what a beautiful sentiment! What are you currently working on?
I’m keeping that one close to the vest. I will only say it is m/m, and is set in Hollywood.
We didn’t get far with that one, did we guys? LOL. Okay, Zampa, we’re hooked – reel us in! Let’s check out the blurb for CANDY G:
Candy Gonzalez, attorney for the most dangerous drug lord in San Antonio, is dubbed Mas Chignon (the baddest) by the community when he walks away from the infamous crook. But those closest to Candy know the formidable lawyer is really an old fashioned romantic with a poetic soul, whose glock shares the glove compartment with his boyhood teddy bear. When he crosses paths with gorgeous, street-wise Carlos Alvarez, Candy is sure he’s met his ideal man, and the revered Mas Chignon is brought to his lovesick knees.
Drawn to the enigmatic Candy’s’ good looks and power, Carlos becomes the attorney’s lover and falls for the beautiful, gentle man behind the Mas Chignon persona. Both men harbor secrets—Candy’s past and Carlos’ present. When their truths are revealed, the one tie that binds them could be the test that strengthens their love or the knife that severs it.
Thanks for playing with us, Zampa! (No really. We saw you avoid that last question, and we’re all staring at you because you’re toying with us.) AHEM. At any rate, rumor has it there will be a sequel to CANDY G, but that’s all I can say since I saw that in an public place, LOL.
